Nexus Children’s Hospital – The Woodlands provides specialized inpatient care for patients with complex medical, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental needs. Through our Jump Start Program , we serve children, adolescents, and young adults with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) and childhood obesity , combining structured nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral support to promote improved health and greater independence.
We also provide neurodevelopmental care for patients ages 16 and older , including individuals with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual and developmental disabilities who require a structured inpatient environment and coordinated medical and behavioral support. The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive, patient-centered nursing care across our specialized programs, supporting patients with complex medical, neurodevelopmental, and psychiatric needs. Working under the supervision of Nursing Leadership, the RN delivers safe, compassionate, evidence-based care while supporting medical stability, behavioral regulation, and individualized treatment goals. This role collaborates closely with an interdisciplinary team and provides guidance to direct care staff to maintain a safe, structured, therapeutic environment.
Key Responsibilities Deliver direct nursing care in accordance with physician orders, facility policies, and the Texas Nurse Practice Act. Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments, including patients’ medical status, behavioral presentation, communication needs, and responses to treatment. Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans that address medical, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental needs.
Administer medications, treatments, and therapeutic interventions safely and accurately, monitoring for effectiveness and adverse reactions. Recognize changes in patient condition and promptly communicate concerns to physicians and Nursing Leadership. Support prescribed nutrition plans, physical activity, and daily routines in collaboration with the treatment team.
Adapt care and communication to each patient’s developmental level, sensory needs, and ability to express discomfort or distress. Use de-escalation techniques, trauma-informed approaches, and individualized behavioral strategies to support patient safety and emotional regulation. Provide leadership and guidance to Patient Care Assistant (PCA) staff, reinforcing safe care practices, teamwork, and consistent implementation of treatment plans.
Collaborate with physicians, therapists, behavioral health professionals, dietitians, social workers, and other team members to coordinate care. Educate patients, families, and caregivers on medications, health needs, and care strategies within the scope of nursing practice. Maintain accurate, timely documentation of assessments, interventions, patient responses, and progress.
Participate in quality improvement, infection prevention, and patient safety initiatives. Qualifications Education & Licensure Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas. BLS certification required upon hire.
ACLS and PALS certifications required within 45 days of hire. De-escalation training required within 30 days of hire. Experience Minimum of one year of nursing experience in an acute care, post-acute, pediatric, behavioral health, or neurodevelopmental setting preferred.
Experience caring for patients with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual and developmental disabilities, PWS, or complex medical and psychiatric conditions strongly preferred. Skills & Abilities Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and nursing assessment skills. Ability to provide individualized care to patients with varying developmental levels and communication abilities.
Knowledge of crisis intervention, de-escalation, and trauma-informed care. Ability to maintain a calm, consistent approach in a structured therapeutic environment. Effective communication, documentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
