This is a primarily inpatient rehab unit position at UCSF Stanyan hospital with potential to float to acute care and/or other UCSF campuses as needed. The Staff Speech Pathologist (Speech Pathologist 2) reports to the Clinical Supervisor and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. The Staff Speech Pathologist works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
The Staff Speech Pathologist with specific pediatric competencies and clinical experience may also work with infants, children and/or adolescents. Under general direction and upon receipt of licensed approved provider written referrals, the Staff Speech Pathologist plans and administers a full range of speech and dysphagia therapy services for patients with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments. Services include patient evaluations using speech-language pathology tests and measurements, establishment of therapeutic intervention goals and the development of therapeutic intervention programs, and implementation of therapeutic intervention plans utilizing all aspects of the speech-language pathology scope of practice.
The Staff Speech Pathologist demonstrates practice competence with patients of varying complexity and clinical presentation across levels of acuity. The Staff Speech Pathologist may seek mentoring for novel clinical presentations or areas of specialty practice for which the Staff Speech Pathologist is not experienced or certified. The Staff Speech Pathologist maintains all applicable patient records related to the delivery of patient care services, is organized in work habits, and demonstrates effective time management skills.
While performing job duties, the Staff Speech Pathologist may also supervise Speech Pathology Students, Speech Pathology Clinical Fellows, and Rehabilitation Aides. The Staff Speech Pathologist participates in regular professional and clinical development activities, completing 40 hours or more per year. As a member of the clinical care team, the Staff Speech Pathologist also participates in and may lead compliance, quality, safety, and process improvement initiatives in the department, local care setting, and organization.

Performs Speech Language Pathology evaluations on referral by a licensed physician or dentist for patients of varying clinical complexity, across levels of acuity. 2.
Selects and administers evidence-based neurological, dysphagia, cognitive-linguistic, voice and speech-language tests and measures to determine a patient’s functional limitations. 3. Establishes short- and long-term therapeutic goals based on the results of the evaluation and in consultation with the referring provider and caregiver/family. 4. Develops a therapeutic plan of care based on the results of the evaluation and established goals.
Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic interventions based on the patient’s progress and performance. 5. Administers direct patient care utilizing the full range of speech-language pathology techniques and methods within scope of practice and level of competence, appropriate to the patient’s goals and plan of care. 6. Delegates and supervises any part of the patient’s therapeutic intervention that can be legally and appropriately done by support staff. 7.
Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate. 8. Prepares and maintains accurate and timely patient care records as required by policy and payer requirements, including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes, charges for services provided, and third-party payer reports (eg CCS, Medi-Cal) 9. Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, caregivers/families, department staff, managers, and other clinical personnel. 10.
Reports on patient progress at various rounds, clinics, and team conferences as indicated. 11. Demonstrates effective time management and organization skills. 12. Performs any other duties related to patient care, as required. 15% YES Departmental Responsibilities 1.
Completes work-related routine departmental tasks (eg. timecard completion, schedule sign up) in a timely manner. 2. Communicates clearly and timely with Supervisor and Manager regarding work requirements including changes in availability/status, conformance with licensure and AHA BLS certification renewal, and completion of UC required learning. 3. Participates in and may lead department and organizational compliance, quality, safety, and process improvement activities. 4.

Participates in orientation and training of new staff; may serve as a clinical mentor to colleagues seeking to advance their skills and competence. 3. Participates in and provides programs to other hospital departments and the community. 4. After completing ASHA Clinical Preceptor Training, participates in clinical instruction of affiliating short- and long-term Speech-Language Pathology students. 5.
Participates in educational activities related to other health care students (eg nursing, medical, physical therapy students). 6. The total sum should add up to 100%.) REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Minimum of 1 year of licensed experience. Minimum of 40 hours of professional development activities, 50% of which are continuing education units (CEUs) or relevant academic coursework. The remainder can include mentoring, Grand Rounds, independent reading, etc.
Demonstrates ability to consistently meet clinical caseload requirements of a staff level therapist. Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours and 5 days per week. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
Ability to recognize signs of distress. Basic computer skills in word processing and online communication. Proven ability to mentor professional behaviors including interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.
This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
Prior professional clinical experience in an academic medical center environment. Prior experience working with an interdisciplinary health provider team. Ability to work full time, 5 days per week.
Possession of a Masters Degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited professional educational program. 5 years of experience in a relevant specialty area across the rehabilitation care continuum. 2 years of experience in outpatient clinical care, including telehealth services. Competence with performance and interpretation of Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS)/Fiberoptic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) in complex patient presentations.
Prior experience as a clinical preceptor and prior experience teaching to a wide variety of audiences. REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATION Possession of licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California. Possession of CPR certification from the AHA.
EDUCATION Masters degree with clinical fellowship. (For new hires and current staff who graduated 15 or more years ago, they may have a Bachelor’s degree, they are then grandfathered into PT/OT/Speech licenses by the relevant licensing boards.)
